Over 250 learners and guests attended the Adult Education Awards Ceremony in The Minella Hotel, Clonmel on Thursday, October 15th. Awards were presented at Levels 2 – 5 to learners that participated in full-time VTOS programmes, as well as part-time programmes BTEI and Adult Literacy. Some learners were receiving Major Awards at these levels, as well as recognition for their Leaving Certificate. The types of awards being presented included General Learning, ICT, Business, Childcare, Animal Care, Healthcare and Sports and Recreation. An added feature of the ceremony was the opportunity to hear from learners themselves about how their lives had improved as a result of returning to learning. One learner, Shaun, read aloud about his experiences. “It was after my grandson asked me to read something to him that I knew it was time that I did something about my reading and writing. I wanted to be able to read to him. I never thought I would enjoy learning so much for myself. Now that my reading and writing has improved, I’ve also learnt how to use the computer and send emails.” Another learner spoke of her gratitude to her friends and tutor who encouraged her to stick with her studies and stay the course.
Welcoming the learners, ETB Chairperson, Cllr John Hogan quoted Nelson Mandela on the importance of education and having a passion for what you do. He paid tribute to families who supported those receiving awards. Fionuala Mc Geever, CE and Eileen Condon, Acting EO were on hand to present awards with John. Eileen thanked the committed staff who helped make this night such a success and Board members who travelled to be there for supporting her work and ensuring that the service was a quality and effective one for the learners. Photographs, a cup of tea and delicious food rounded off what was a very enjoyable evening for all.
